Abstract
Social psychology is the scientific study of how the actual, imagined, or implied presence of other people shapes an individual's thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. It emerged as an experimental discipline in the mid-twentieth century, when Kurt Lewin recast behaviour as a joint function of the person and the situation. Its signature findings are situational: ordinary people conform to a unanimous majority against the evidence of their own eyes, obey an authority to the point of apparent harm, revise their attitudes to justify their actions, and favour an in-group defined by nothing more than a coin toss. The field also supplies a systematic account of how observers explain behaviour, and documents the biases, such as over-attributing others' conduct to disposition, that this explanation is prone to. Since 2011 a reproducibility crisis has driven large-scale replication, preregistration, and more rigorous methods.

Social psychology occupies the boundary between the individual mind and the social world, asking how the presence of others—real, remembered, or merely anticipated—alters what a person perceives, judges, and does (Allport, 1954). Its founding insight, due to Kurt Lewin, is that behaviour is a function of the person and the environment acting together, so that explaining an action requires attending to the situation as closely as to the actor's disposition (Lewin, 1947). The field matters because its most durable results are counterintuitive and consequential: they show that situations exert a far larger pull on ordinary behaviour than intuition allows, a lesson that reframes questions from conformity and obedience to prejudice and political division (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).

What Social Psychology Is
Social psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the effects of group membership and social context on the behaviour, attitudes, and beliefs of an individual. Its distinctive move is to treat the social situation not as background but as an independent variable: the number of people present, the unanimity of a majority, the instructions of an authority, and the label attached to a group are all quantities that can be varied in an experiment and shown to change what a person does. This is the methodological inheritance of Kurt Lewin, who argued that behaviour B is a function of the person P and the environment E, written B = f(P, E), and who founded the tradition of testing social theory by controlled intervention rather than armchair generalisation (Lewin, 1947).
The field is organised less by a single mechanism than by a set of recurring questions. How do people form impressions of one another and explain what others do? How does the presence of a group change an individual's judgements and actions? How do attitudes form, and how do they change—sometimes to bring belief into line with prior behaviour rather than the reverse? And how does the mere division of people into categories give rise to favouritism, stereotyping, and conflict? Fritz Heider's analysis of the naive psychology by which ordinary people explain behaviour supplied the conceptual vocabulary for the first of these questions and seeded the study of attribution that dominated the field for decades (Heider, 1958).

Types of Social Psychology
The Medical Subject Headings classification files Social Psychology under two parents—Behavior and Behavior Mechanisms in the behaviour tree and Psychology in the discipline tree—and lists fifteen narrower descriptors directly beneath it, shown in Table 1. These subtypes are the topics the biomedical literature indexes under social psychology, from the emotional climate of families to the norms and values of groups. Because MeSH is an indexing vocabulary rather than a theory of social life, this list records how the literature is catalogued, not a claim that the field divides at exactly these joints; the categories are not mutually exclusive, and they cross-cut the theoretical organisation by process (influence, attribution, identity) used in the rest of this article. None of the fifteen is yet a separate article on this site, so the terms below are listed without links.

Conformity, Obedience, and Social Influence
The experimental core of social psychology is the study of social influence: the ways an individual's behaviour is changed by others. Solomon Asch supplied its most striking demonstration. Participants judged which of three comparison lines matched a standard, a task so easy that isolated controls erred on under one per cent of trials. Seated among confederates who unanimously gave a plainly wrong answer, roughly three-quarters of participants conformed to the majority on at least one critical trial, and yielding occurred on about a third of critical trials overall (Asch, 1956). The effect was not mere public compliance dressed over private certainty for everyone; some participants came to doubt their own perception. Two variables mattered above all: the size of the majority, with conformity rising sharply from one confederate to three and then plateauing, and its unanimity, since a single dissenting ally who broke ranks reduced conformity to a small fraction of its level under a unanimous majority.
Stanley Milgram turned the question from judgement to conscience. Instructed by an experimenter to deliver what they believed were escalating electric shocks to a protesting learner, about 65 per cent of participants continued to the maximum 450-volt level, despite visible distress (Milgram, 1963). The result is routinely misread as evidence of latent cruelty; its actual lesson is situational, that ordinary people placed under the graduated demands of a legitimate authority will act against their own values, and that the proximity of the victim, the proximity of the authority, and the presence of disobedient peers move obedience up and down. A modern synthesis frames both findings within a broader taxonomy of influence, distinguishing normative influence, the desire to be liked and accepted, from informational influence, the use of others as evidence about reality, and cataloguing the compliance techniques that exploit each (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004). The demonstration below lets the reader vary majority size and the presence of an ally and read off the predicted rate of conformity.

Attribution and the Explanation of Behaviour
Alongside influence, social psychology studies how people make sense of behaviour—their own and others'. Heider's naive psychology proposed that ordinary observers act as intuitive scientists, assigning the causes of an action either to something about the person or to something about the situation (Heider, 1958). Harold Kelley formalised this into the covariation model: to decide whether an outcome springs from the person, the stimulus, or the circumstances, observers implicitly consult three kinds of information—consensus (do others respond the same way?), distinctiveness (does this person respond this way only to this stimulus?), and consistency (does the response recur over time?). High consensus, high distinctiveness, and high consistency point to the stimulus; low consensus, low distinctiveness, and high consistency point to the person; low consistency points to transient circumstance.
The systematic errors in this process became the field's most productive theme. Lee Ross named the tendency of observers to over-attribute others' behaviour to stable disposition, and to under-weight the situational pressures that a Lewinian analysis would foreground, the fundamental attribution error (Ross, 1977). A companion caution came from Richard Nisbett and Timothy Wilson, who marshalled evidence that people have poor introspective access to the causes of their own judgements and often confabulate plausible reasons, which limits the evidential value of self-report and complicates any attribution built upon it (Nisbett & Wilson, 1977). More recent work recasts attribution as inference under uncertainty, treating the observer as building and updating a probabilistic model of others in a world where their intentions are hidden and their responses depend on being modelled (FeldmanHall & Shenhav, 2019). The demonstration below implements Kelley's cube: set the three information dimensions and read off the attribution the model predicts.

Consensus is whether others also laugh at this comedian; distinctiveness is whether Anna laughs only at this comedian; consistency is whether she laughs at this comedian every time.
Cognitive Dissonance and Attitude Change
Leon Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance supplied social psychology with its most generative account of attitude change (Festinger, 1957). The theory holds that holding two inconsistent cognitions, or acting in a way that contradicts an attitude, produces an aversive state of arousal that the person is motivated to reduce—often by changing the more pliable attitude to fit the behaviour, rather than the reverse. Its most counterintuitive prediction concerns insufficient justification. When a person is induced to argue for a position they privately reject, a small incentive produces more attitude change than a large one: the large reward supplies an external reason for the behaviour and so dissolves the dissonance, whereas the small reward leaves the person needing to justify the act by genuinely coming to believe it.
This inverse relationship, first demonstrated when participants paid a single dollar to praise a dull task rated it more enjoyable than those paid twenty dollars, overturned the reinforcement intuition that larger rewards buy stronger attitudes. It also illustrates the field's recurring pattern: an attitude is not a fixed possession consulted before acting but is often constructed after the fact to render one's own behaviour coherent—a self-perception the person has no privileged window into (Nisbett & Wilson, 1977). The demonstration below models predicted post-task attitude as a function of the incentive offered, reproducing the counterintuitive decline as the reward grows.

Insufficient Justification and Attitude Change
A participant is paid to tell the next person that a tedious task was enjoyable. Move the incentive and read the predicted attitude they end up holding, from -5 (dull) to +5 (enjoyable). Reinforcement intuition predicts the line should rise with pay; dissonance theory predicts it falls.
Social Identity, Stereotyping, and Intergroup Relations
The final organising question concerns groups: how membership shapes identity, and how the line between in-group and out-group generates favouritism and conflict. Henri Tajfel and John Turner's social identity theory made the startling claim, backed by the minimal group paradigm, that categorisation alone suffices: assigned to groups on a basis as arbitrary as a coin toss or a preference between painters, participants reliably allocate more reward to anonymous in-group members than to out-group members, even at a cost to absolute in-group gain (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). The mechanism is motivational—people draw self-esteem from the groups they belong to and so are moved to see those groups as favourably distinct (Scheepers & Ellemers, 2019). Gordon Allport had earlier set the agenda for reducing such bias, proposing that contact between groups under the right conditions—equal status, common goals, cooperation, and institutional support—could lower prejudice (Allport, 1954).
Two lines of work extended the analysis to hidden and automatic processes. Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson showed that merely making a negative stereotype salient can depress the performance of its targets, a situational threat in the air rather than an internalised deficit, which they termed stereotype threat (Steele & Aronson, 1995). Anthony Greenwald and colleagues introduced the Implicit Association Test to measure attitudes that respondents may not report or even endorse, opening the study of implicit social cognition (Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998). The content of stereotypes is itself systematic rather than arbitrary: Susan Fiske and colleagues' stereotype content model shows that groups are appraised along two nearly universal dimensions—warmth, which registers whether their intentions are friendly or hostile, and competence, which registers whether they can act on those intentions—and that the four quadrants of this space predict distinct prejudices, from the admiration reserved for high-warmth, high-competence in-groups to the contempt directed at groups rated low on both (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick, & Xu, 2002). Contemporary research grounds these phenomena in the brain and in politics: intergroup bias engages identifiable neural systems for threat, reward, and mentalizing (Cikara & Van Bavel, 2014), and the same identity dynamics drive the motivated reasoning that hardens partisan belief (Van Bavel & Pereira, 2018). What actually reduces prejudice, as opposed to what is assumed to, remains an active and humbling question (Paluck, Porat, Clark, & Green, 2021). Table 2 summarises the landmark findings that anchor these themes; several relate directly to social cognition and everyday decision making.

Worked Example
Consider a stylised model of Asch's conformity paradigm, chosen to reproduce the well-replicated shape of his results rather than to fit a particular dataset (Asch, 1956). Let the probability that a participant conforms on a given critical trial be a logistic function of the unanimous majority size n, p(n) = 0.37 / (1 + e^(-1.5(n - 2))), so that conformity is negligible for a lone confederate, climbs steeply between two and four, and saturates near the empirical ceiling of about 0.37 for larger majorities. Let the presence of a single dissenting ally multiply this probability by 0.25, capturing Asch's finding that one dissenter cuts conformity to roughly a quarter of its unanimous level.
Take a majority of n = 3. The exponent is -1.5 x (3 - 2) = -1.5, so p = 0.37 / (1 + e^(1.5)) = 0.37 / (1 + 4.482) = 0.37 / 5.482 = 0.303. Over a session of 12 critical trials, the expected number of conforming responses is 0.303 x 12 = 3.63. Now add one dissenting ally: the per-trial probability falls to 0.303 x 0.25 = 0.076, and the expected number of conforming responses over the same 12 trials falls to 0.076 x 12 = 0.91. The single ally therefore reduces expected conformity from about 3.6 responses to about 0.9, a drop of 75 per cent, produced not by changing the majority's size but by breaking its unanimity. That a lone dissenter matters so much more than a large majority is the counterintuitive core of Asch's result, and it is the quantity the demonstration above computes as the two controls are varied (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).
Discussion
Social psychology's enduring contribution is a body of evidence that situations shape behaviour more powerfully, and dispositions less reliably, than intuition assumes. Conformity, obedience, dissonance reduction, and minimal-group favouritism are all cases in which manipulating the social context—its unanimity, its authority, its incentives, its category boundaries—changes what ordinary people do, and the correspondence bias names the very habit of thought that leads observers to miss this. The same framework scales up to the pressing problems of intergroup conflict and political polarisation, where identity-protective reasoning turns factual disagreement into a contest between groups (Van Bavel & Pereira, 2018).
The field's confidence in its own catalogue was shaken after 2011. A large collaborative effort to replicate published psychology experiments found that a substantial fraction, disproportionately in social psychology, did not reproduce at their original effect sizes (Open Science Collaboration, 2015). The response has been methodological reform rather than retreat: preregistration to separate prediction from post hoc storytelling, larger and better-powered samples, multi-laboratory studies, and open data and materials (Nosek et al., 2022). Some canonical effects survived this scrutiny robustly, others shrank, and a few dissolved; the discipline that has emerged is more cautious about single dramatic studies and more demanding of cumulative evidence. This is not a crisis unique to the field so much as the field encountering, early and publicly, the statistical and incentive problems latent throughout the behavioural sciences.
Current Directions
Three fronts are especially active. The first is the neuroscience of intergroup relations, which locates bias not in a single prejudice centre but in the interaction of systems for threat, reward, and reasoning about others' minds, and asks how flexibly group boundaries can be redrawn (Cikara & Van Bavel, 2014). The second is a computational turn in social cognition, which models the observer as performing Bayesian inference about hidden intentions and updating beliefs about others under uncertainty, giving formal precision to the century-old problem of how people read one another (FeldmanHall & Shenhav, 2019). The third is the application of these ideas to political identity, where the machinery of social identity and motivated reasoning explains why partisans process the same evidence to opposite conclusions and why correction so often fails (Van Bavel & Pereira, 2018).
Running through all three is the reckoning with what actually works. A systematic review of prejudice-reduction research found that the interventions most confidently recommended—including light-touch versions of contact—often rest on weaker causal evidence than their popularity implies, and that well-identified field experiments remain scarce (Paluck et al., 2021). The reform-minded methodology that grew out of the replication crisis is now the field's baseline: preregistered, adequately powered, and increasingly conducted across many laboratories at once (Nosek et al., 2022). The trajectory is from a discipline of memorable single demonstrations toward one of cumulative, quantified, and reproducible effects.
