Cognitive dissonance is the aversive state that arises when a person holds psychologically inconsistent cognitions, and the motivation it creates to restore consistency. What Cognitive Dissonance Is

Festinger began from a definition of cognition broad enough to cover any element of knowledge a person holds about themselves, their behavior, or their world. Two such elements stand in one of three relations: they are irrelevant, they are consonant when one follows from the other, or they are dissonant when the obverse of one follows from the other. Dissonance is the state that dissonant elements produce, and the theory's first postulate is that it is psychologically uncomfortable, so that the person is pressed to reduce it and to avoid situations and information likely to increase it (Festinger, 1957). The Induced-Compliance Paradigm

The experiment that made the theory famous set its most counterintuitive prediction against reinforcement theory directly. Festinger and Carlsmith had participants perform an hour of tedious, repetitive tasks, then asked each one to tell the next waiting participant that the work had been enjoyable. For this small lie some were paid one dollar and others twenty. When later asked in private how much they had actually liked the task, the participants paid one dollar rated it markedly more enjoyable than those paid twenty, who did not differ from a control group that told no lie (Festinger & Carlsmith, 1959). Reinforcement theory predicts the reverse, that the larger reward should breed the warmer attitude. Free Choice and Effort Justification

The second founding paradigm needs no deception. In the free-choice procedure a person rates a set of objects, then chooses between two rated nearly equally, and finally rates everything again. The act of choosing creates dissonance, because every attractive feature of the rejected option and every flaw of the chosen one is now dissonant with the decision. The reliable result is a spreading of the alternatives: on the second rating the chosen option rises and the rejected one falls, widening a gap that had been narrow (Brehm, 1956). The person reduces post-decision dissonance by convincing themselves that the choice was more clearly correct than the evidence at the time warranted. The effect is the engine behind a good deal of post-purchase rationalization.

Effort justification is the same mechanism applied to what a goal cost to reach. Aronson and Mills had women undergo a screening to join a discussion group, with the screening either mild or severely embarrassing, before they heard the same dull discussion. Those who had endured the severe initiation rated the group and its conversation as more attractive than those admitted easily (Aronson & Mills, 1959). Suffering to attain something is dissonant with the thing being worthless, and the cheapest resolution is to decide the thing was worth it. Free Choice and the Spreading of Alternatives

Rate two options you must decide between, then commit to one. Choosing makes every good point of the option you gave up dissonant with your decision, and the cheapest repair is to revalue: the chosen option looks better and the rejected one worse than a moment before. Revising the Theory

The original theory was powerful but loose: almost any inconsistency could be described as dissonant after the fact, and the account said little about which cognition would change. Four decades of revision tightened it by asking what actually triggers the state, and the answers, summarized in Table 1, are not identical. Aronson argued that dissonance bites hardest when the inconsistency implicates the self-concept, so that the discomfort is really about acting in a way that violates one's image as a decent and competent person rather than about abstract logical conflict (Aronson, 1969). On that reading the one-dollar liar is troubled less by the contradiction than by having been the kind of person who would mislead another for a pittance.

Cooper and Fazio pressed further with the new look, proposing that dissonance is aroused not by inconsistency at all but by the belief that one has freely brought about a foreseeable aversive consequence. What matters is feeling personally responsible for an outcome one would rather not have caused (Cooper & Fazio, 1984). Harmon-Jones then showed that the requirement could be relaxed: participants who wrote a counterattitudinal statement they believed no one would ever read, producing no aversive consequence, still showed attitude change, which indicates that inconsistency alone can suffice and returned some of Festinger's original generality to the theory (Harmon-Jones et al., 1996). Steele's self-affirmation theory came at the problem from the reduction side. If the discomfort stems from a threat to global self-integrity, then affirming the self on any important dimension, unrelated to the provoking act, should dissolve the need to rationalize. Steele found exactly that: people given a chance to affirm a valued part of themselves no longer changed their attitudes to resolve the dissonance, because their self-worth had been restored by another route (Steele, 1988). The sharpest alternative, though, denied that dissonance was doing any work at all. Bem's self-perception theory held that people infer their attitudes from observing their own behavior and its circumstances, exactly as an outside observer would, with no inner tension required; the one-dollar participant simply reasons that anyone who would say the task was fun for so little must have found it somewhat fun (Bem, 1967). The debate was eventually resolved in part by scope: self-perception describes attitude change in the absence of arousal, whereas dissonance operates when the counterattitudinal act is genuinely arousing, and the two processes cover different regions of the same phenomenon.

The generality of the effect has its own boundaries. Kitayama and colleagues found that the standard free-choice effect appears readily in North American participants but is muted or absent in Japanese participants unless choice is framed in a socially relevant way, indicating that the dissonance a decision arouses depends on culturally shaped views of the self (Kitayama et al., 2004). At the other end of development, a spreading-of-alternatives effect has been demonstrated in four-year-old children and in capuchin monkeys, using a blind-choice design that rules out simple preference explanations, which suggests the mechanism is early-emerging and not uniquely human (Egan, Santos, & Bloom, 2007).

Dissonance as Arousal and Discomfort

For the state to be more than a redescription of the behavior it explains, it has to be independently detectable, and a line of work established that it is. Zanna and Cooper gave participants a placebo pill described as either arousing, relaxing, or inert before a counterattitudinal essay. Those told the pill was arousing attributed their tension to it and showed no attitude change; those told it was relaxing, who had to overcome an expected calm, showed even more change than usual. Attitude change tracked the arousal that participants could not explain away, which is what the theory requires of a genuine drive state (Zanna & Cooper, 1974). Croyle and Cooper then measured the arousal directly, recording elevated skin conductance after a counterattitudinal act under free choice, confirming a physiological signature rather than an inferred one (Croyle & Cooper, 1983).

Elliot and Devine identified the subjective side of the state, showing that a counterattitudinal act produces a specific psychological discomfort, reportable on a mood scale, and that attitude change reduces this discomfort, which is what marks it as motivated rather than incidental (Elliot & Devine, 1994). Taken together the arousal and the discomfort findings put the state on firm empirical ground: dissonance is a real, aversive, arousing condition, and attitude change is the behavior that turns it off. The Neural Basis

Neuroimaging has localized the conflict signal and the preference change that follows it. Recording during counterattitudinal choice, van Veen and colleagues found that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and the anterior insula were more active precisely when participants complied against their view, and that the size of this activation predicted how much their attitudes subsequently shifted (van Veen et al., 2009). The regions are the brain's established markers of conflict monitoring and aversive interoceptive states, which fits the theory's claim that dissonance is a felt inconsistency the person is driven to resolve.

The choice-induced preference change of the free-choice paradigm has been tracked to the reward system. Izuma and colleagues showed that choosing between equally valued items altered activity in the striatum in line with the new preferences, evidence that the spreading of alternatives is registered where subjective value is coded (Izuma et al., 2010). Sharot and colleagues found that the anticipated pleasure of an option, indexed by caudate activity, rose for chosen and fell for rejected options after a decision, so that choosing does not merely reveal preferences but reshapes them at the level of expected value (Sharot, De Martino, & Dolan, 2009). Across these studies the pattern is consistent: a conflict signal in cingulate and insula, and a revaluation in striatal reward circuitry, give dissonance and its resolution a physical substrate.

Worked Example

The magnitude of dissonance can be made numerical with Festinger's own proposal, that it equals the total importance of the dissonant cognitions divided by the total importance of all relevant cognitions, dissonant plus consonant. Consider a smoker who keeps smoking. Three cognitions are consonant with continuing, rated for importance on a ten-point scale: it helps them relax, weight 6; it is enjoyable, weight 5; and quitting would cause weight gain, weight 3, for a consonant total of 14. Three cognitions are dissonant with continuing: smoking causes cancer, weight 9; it is expensive, weight 4; and it bothers their family, weight 6, for a dissonant total of 19.

The magnitude of dissonance is therefore 19 divided by the sum of 19 and 14, or 19 over 33, which is 0.58. More than half of the weighted relevant cognitions oppose the behavior, so the pressure to reduce the tension is high. The theory's three routes each lower the ratio in a different way. Suppose the smoker rationalizes the central dissonant belief, deciding the cancer evidence is not conclusive and dropping its importance from 9 to 3; the dissonant total falls to 13, and the magnitude drops to 13 over 27, or 0.48. Alternatively they add a new consonant cognition, that smoking keeps their weight down, at importance 5; the consonant total rises to 19, and the magnitude falls to 19 over 38, or exactly 0.50. Either move reduces the tension without the person having to quit, which is precisely why dissonance reduction so often preserves the behavior it was supposed to correct. Cognitive dissonance has proved one of the most generative ideas in social psychology because it makes non-obvious predictions that repeatedly held: less reward yielding more change, more effort yielding more liking, more freedom yielding more rationalization. Its history is also a case study in theoretical maturation, from a sweeping first statement to a set of sharper claims about self-threat, responsibility, and action, each carving off the conditions under which the effect is strong. A recent review organizes the reduction strategies people actually use and notes how unevenly they have been studied, with attitude change far better documented than trivialization or the addition of consonant cognitions (McGrath, 2017), and commentaries have pressed for clearer specification of when dissonance arises and how its reduction should be measured before further paradigms are built on it (Vaidis & Bran, 2018).
