Rather than a single testable theory, it is an orienting paradigm built on five principles — lifelong development, human agency, the timing of lives, linked lives, and historical time and place — that specify how biography and social structure intersect. This article sets out those principles, traces the paradigm from Glen Elder's studies of children of the Great Depression to its contemporary formalisation, and examines cumulative advantage, the mechanism by which small early differences widen into large ones. The principle of historical time and place is where the perspective began. The principle of timing generalises this insight beyond dramatic historical events to the ordinary schedule of a life. Societies hold expectations about when transitions should occur — when to leave school, marry, have children, retire — and a transition that arrives early or late relative to that schedule carries consequences an on-time transition does not. These shared expectations about the proper age for a transition are what Bernice Neugarten called age norms, the internalised social clock against which people judge themselves and one another as on time or off time; being off time, early or late, itself carries social costs independent of the transition's content (Neugarten et al., 1965). Early transitions can foreclose options and compress subsequent stages; late ones can create role conflicts. The study of these socially expected timetables and of variability in the order and tempo of transitions has been one of the paradigm's most productive lines, especially in the analysis of how the transition to adulthood has become more prolonged and less standardised in recent decades (Shanahan, 2000; Settersten & Mayer, 1997).

The principle of linked lives holds that no life is lived in isolation. A person's trajectory is bound to those of parents, partners, children, and peers, so that a transition or crisis in one life ramifies through the others: a parent's job loss reshapes a child's prospects, a spouse's retirement restructures the other's daily life, and the health of one family member reorganises the roles of the rest. Much of the social patterning of the life course operates through these ties rather than on individuals directly (Moen et al., 1992). Recent theoretical work argues that agency and linked lives are not separable principles but two aspects of one process, since the choices a person makes are always made through and for the people to whom their life is tied (Landes & Settersten, 2019).

The principles of human agency and lifelong development complete the frame. Agency insists that people are not merely carried along by social schedules but actively build their lives through the choices they make within the constraints they face — Elder called this the construction of one's own life course through action (Elder, 1994). Lifelong development asserts that this construction never stops: the causes and consequences of behaviour extend across the entire span, so that childhood conditions can shape old age and late-life circumstances can still redirect a trajectory. This last claim has proved especially fertile in health research, where a life course approach to chronic disease traces how exposures accumulated from gestation onward combine to produce adult illness (Ben-Shlomo & Kuh, 2002).

## Cumulative Advantage

If the principles describe the architecture of a life, cumulative advantage describes one of its most consequential dynamics. The idea, sometimes called the Matthew effect after the biblical passage in which the rich grow richer, is that small differences present early in a trajectory tend to widen over time, because an initial advantage improves the odds of securing further advantages. A child who reads slightly better attracts more encouragement and reads more, widening the gap; a worker with a slightly better first job accrues experience and contacts that make the next job better still (Dannefer, 2003).

The mechanism matters for how inequality is understood. A cross-sectional snapshot shows a large gap between groups and invites the inference that some large difference in ability or treatment produced it. The life course view shows that a large late gap can be the compounded result of a small early one, generated by an ordinary process of accumulation rather than by any single dramatic cause. ## Worked Example

The core of cumulative advantage can be made exact, which is what the third demonstration computes. The striking feature is that no new unfairness is required for a gap to widen: applying the same proportional growth to two unequal starting points is enough. Let two people begin a trajectory with resource levels SA = 100 and SB = 90, an initial absolute gap of 10 (a ratio of about 1.11). Suppose each accumulates resources at the same proportional rate r = 0.10 per period, so that each period applies

The lesson is the one Dannefer draws: equal proportional treatment of an initially unequal pair does not preserve equality, it amplifies inequality, so a widening late-life gap needs no fresh injustice to explain it (Dannefer, 2003). ## Discussion

The life course perspective's great strength is also the source of its sharpest criticism. By insisting that development is lifelong, agentic, timed, linked, and historically situated, it captures the texture of real lives far better than stage models or static snapshots. But because it is a paradigm rather than a theory, it can be difficult to falsify: nearly any finding can be accommodated by invoking one principle or another after the fact. Critics have argued that the framework has been richer in orienting concepts than in specified, testable mechanisms, and that its early formulations leaned toward a normative, middle-class model of the 'standard' biography that fit some populations far better than others (George, 1993). A related concern is that the celebration of agency can slide into overstating how much freedom people have against structural constraints they did not choose and cannot easily escape (Dannefer, 2003). The very existence of a 'standard' biography is itself a historical achievement: Martin Kohli's thesis of the institutionalization of the life course argues that the modern state and labour market organised life into a standardised tripartite sequence — education, then work, then retirement — ordered around chronological age, so that the normative biography the critics flag was manufactured by institutions and is now visibly de-standardising as those institutions change (Kohli, 2007).

The field's response has been to sharpen rather than abandon. Karl Ulrich Mayer's review of the paradigm's maturation documents a turn from broad sensibility toward explicit modelling: the accumulation of large panel datasets and the development of statistical methods for trajectories, sequences, and event histories have let researchers test propositions that an earlier, more programmatic literature could only assert (Mayer, 2009). The life course cube, proposed by Laura Bernardi, Johannes Huinink, and Richard Settersten, is an explicit analytical device that separates the several interacting dimensions along which lives unfold — the multiple domains of a life, the levels from individual to society, and the time dimension — so that the vague injunction to study 'linked lives across time' becomes a set of modelable relations rather than a slogan (Bernardi et al., 2019). In the same spirit, the tight coupling of agency and linked lives has been reframed as a single principle, on the argument that a person's choices are always exercised through the relationships that constitute their life (Landes & Settersten, 2019).

The perspective has also proved a powerful lens on population-wide shocks. Analyses of the Covid-19 pandemic used life course concepts to predict that its effects would be profoundly unequal — falling differently on cohorts depending on the life stage at which the disruption struck, and amplifying existing cumulative (dis)advantage — precisely the pattern the Great Depression studies first identified (Settersten et al., 2020). Reflecting on decades of such research, Settersten has argued that the paradigm's most durable contribution is a habit of mind: the insistence on seeing any moment in a life as the product of everything that came before it and of the historical world in which it is set (Settersten, 2017).
