Adolescent psychology is a branch of psychology that studies the mental, emotional, and social development of people during the second decade of life, the transition from childhood to adulthood. This article traces the field from G. Stanley Hall's 1904 framing of adolescence as a period of storm and stress through its central modern programs: identity formation in the work of Erikson and Marcia, the developmental neuroscience of the adolescent brain, and the study of risk-taking in its social context. A tension runs throughout: adolescents reach adult-level cognitive capacity years before the psychosocial maturity needed to regulate it, a maturity gap that reframes risk-taking as imbalance rather than deficit. What Adolescent Psychology Is
Adolescent psychology is best understood as the developmental study of the second decade of life, together with the effort to explain how the changes of that decade are produced. This asymmetry has always made the field's endpoint contested, and recent scholarship has argued that adolescence, understood as the phase between the onset of puberty and the attainment of a stable adult role, now stretches from roughly age ten to age twenty-four in contemporary societies, considerably longer than the traditional teenage span (Sawyer et al., 2018). Erik Erikson placed this task at the heart of his account of the life cycle, framing adolescence as the stage in which the individual confronts the crisis of identity versus role confusion and must, out of the roles and identifications of childhood, construct a coherent sense of who they are and where they are going (Erikson, 1968). Erikson's account was clinical and theoretical rather than measurable, and its influence on the field would have been narrower had it not been given an empirical form. James Marcia supplied that form, translating Erikson's global notion of an identity crisis into an operational scheme defined by two dimensions: whether the person has explored alternatives, and whether they have made commitments (Marcia, 1966).

The Adolescent Brain
The most consequential development in adolescent psychology over the past three decades has been the emergence of a neuroscience that explains the behavioral profile of adolescence in terms of how the brain matures. The organizing observation is that different neural systems develop on different timetables. Ronald Dahl framed the period as one of both heightened vulnerability and unusual opportunity, arguing that the changes of puberty open a window in which motivational and emotional systems are reorganized and in which experience has an outsized and lasting effect (Dahl, 2004). The influential synthesis that followed, most closely associated with B. J. One behavioral marker of the early-maturing system is sensation seeking, the appetite for novel, intense, and rewarding experience, which rises sharply at puberty and peaks in mid-adolescence before declining, tracking the socioemotional curve rather than the slow rise of control (Steinberg, 2008). Steinberg's synthesis of the social-neuroscience evidence argued that this is why adolescent risk behavior peaks and then declines, tracking the closing of the gap between the two systems rather than any change in what adolescents know about risk (Steinberg, 2008). Risk-Taking in Its Social Context
Adolescent risk-taking is not a constant property of the individual but a state that depends heavily on context, and the most important contextual variable is the presence of peers. Laurence Steinberg and colleagues demonstrated this with a simple, powerful manipulation: participants performed a driving task, either alone or while being observed by peers, and the presence of peers roughly doubled the risk-taking of adolescents while leaving the risk-taking of adults essentially unchanged (Steinberg, 2008). The effect is not that adolescents fail to understand the risk; it is that the social context in which the choice is made shifts its value, making the immediate reward of peer approval loom larger. This finding is the behavioral signature of the developing social brain, the network of regions that Sarah-Jayne Blakemore has shown undergoes marked structural and functional change during adolescence and that supports the heightened attention to social information characteristic of the period (Blakemore, 2008).
The social reorientation of adolescence runs deeper than susceptibility to peer pressure. Adolescents become newly capable of, and preoccupied with, thinking about what others think of them. The practical consequences of the maturational imbalance are sharpened by a further finding: cognitive capacity, the ability to reason and process information, reaches adult levels years before psychosocial maturity, the capacity for impulse control, future orientation, and resistance to peer influence, does. Grace Icenogle, Steinberg, and a large multinational team demonstrated this maturity gap across eleven countries, showing that adolescents attain adult-level cognitive capacity by around age sixteen but do not attain adult-level psychosocial maturity until the twenties (Icenogle et al., 2019). The gap has direct implications for how legal systems should treat adolescents, who may be cognitively competent to make a reasoned decision in a calm setting yet not psychosocially mature enough to resist a heated, peer-saturated one. Worked Example
The dual-systems model makes a specific quantitative claim: that adolescent vulnerability is largest where the socioemotional system most exceeds the cognitive-control system, and that this gap closes with age. It helps to see how such a gap is computed. Represent each system on a scale from 0 to 100. Model the socioemotional system's responsiveness as a curve that rises to a peak in mid-adolescence and then declines, and the cognitive-control system as a curve that rises steadily and levels off in the mid-twenties. A convenient form for the socioemotional curve is a bell shape peaking at age sixteen, S(age) = 100 × exp(−(age − 16)² / 40.5), and for control a logistic rising through a midpoint at 17.5, C(age) = 100 / (1 + exp(−(age − 17.5) / 2.5)). The imbalance at any age is simply the difference, S minus C.
Take age fourteen. The socioemotional value is S(14) = 100 × exp(−(14 − 16)² / 40.5) = 100 × exp(−4 / 40.5) = 100 × exp(−0.0988) = 90.6. The control value is C(14) = 100 / (1 + exp(−(14 − 17.5) / 2.5)) = 100 / (1 + exp(1.4)) = 100 / (1 + 4.055) = 100 / 5.055 = 19.8. The imbalance is 90.6 − 19.8 = 70.8, a large positive gap: the reward-and-social system is running far ahead of the control system. Now take age twenty. Here S(20) = 100 × exp(−(20 − 16)² / 40.5) = 100 × exp(−16 / 40.5) = 100 × exp(−0.3951) = 67.4, while C(20) = 100 / (1 + exp(−(20 − 17.5) / 2.5)) = 100 / (1 + exp(−1)) = 100 / 1.368 = 73.1. The imbalance is now 67.4 − 73.1 = −5.7: control has essentially caught up. The gap peaks near age fourteen and a half, where it reaches about 71, and it crosses zero at just under age twenty, when the control curve overtakes the socioemotional one. This is precisely the shape the model predicts for the age course of risk behavior: a rise into mid-adolescence, a peak, and a decline through the late teens, driven not by knowledge of risk but by the changing balance between two maturing systems (Casey et al., 2008). Discussion
Adolescent psychology has traveled, in a little over a century, from a single evocative metaphor to a mechanistic developmental science. Hall's storm and stress named the phenomenon; Arnett's reappraisal disciplined it into a probabilistic claim; Erikson and Marcia gave the field its account of the central developmental task of identity; and the developmental neuroscience of the past three decades supplied, in the dual-systems model, an explanation of the adolescent behavioral profile in terms of the differential maturation of brain systems. The payoff of this progression has been both scientific and practical. Understanding that adolescent risk-taking reflects a normal, temporary imbalance rather than a defect of character or a failure of knowledge has reshaped how the law, medicine, and education approach young people, informing arguments about juvenile justice, consent, and the design of environments that protect adolescents during the years of peak vulnerability without treating them as incompetent. Real tensions remain. The dual-systems model, for all its explanatory reach, has been criticized for underplaying the adaptive, opportunity-laden side of adolescent sensitivity that Crone and Dahl emphasize, and for describing an average trajectory that conceals enormous individual variation. The field's endpoint remains contested, its cross-cultural generality is still being established, and the causal chain from pubertal hormones through brain change to behavior is far from fully specified. What is no longer in doubt is the field's central reconception: that adolescence is not merely a troubled passage to be endured but a distinctive developmental period with its own logic, one in which the very features that create vulnerability also serve the work of becoming an adult.
Current Directions
The most active current questions in adolescent psychology concern individual differences, mental health, and the boundaries of the period itself. A first direction moves beyond describing the average adolescent to explaining why trajectories diverge so widely. Lucy Foulkes and Sarah-Jayne Blakemore have argued that the field must treat individual differences in brain and behavioral development as a primary object of study rather than as noise around a mean, since the same neural changes that place some adolescents at risk leave most unaffected, and understanding that variation is essential to identifying who is vulnerable (Foulkes & Blakemore, 2018). A second direction concerns mental health.
