Abstract
Self-directed learning is a form of learning in which individuals take the initiative — with or without help from others — to diagnose their needs, set goals, locate resources, choose strategies, and evaluate outcomes. First framed for adult education, the term names both an instructional process learners can be guided through and a dispositional characteristic of the learner, a distinction central to its theory. Its study grew from evidence that most deliberate adult learning is self-planned rather than institutional, and it is now modeled as the coordinated exercise of self-management, self-monitoring, and motivation. Researchers measure self-directedness with dedicated readiness scales and distinguish it from the narrower construct of self-regulated learning. This article defines the construct, traces its principal models, contrasts it with related ideas, and explains how it is measured, with three interactive demonstrations.

Self-directed learning is among the most durable ideas in the study of how adults learn. In its classic definition it is a process in which learners take the initiative, alone or with help, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating goals, identifying resources, selecting and implementing strategies, and evaluating the results (Knowles, 1975). What Self-Directed Learning Is
The canonical account defines self-directed learning by the locus of initiative. In Knowles's formulation it is “a process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without the help of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying human and material resources for learning, choosing and implementing appropriate learning strategies, and evaluating learning outcomes” (Knowles, 1975). What distinguishes it from other learning is not the content or even the presence of a teacher, but who holds primary responsibility for the sequence of decisions that make up a learning project. This is why the parent construct is simply learning: self-directed learning is ordinary learning distinguished by the learner's control over its planning and management.
The construct has two faces that are easy to conflate. As a process or method, self-direction describes how instruction is organized — the degree to which learners, rather than an instructor, manage the tasks of learning. As a personal attribute or goal, self-directedness describes a disposition toward taking ownership of one's own learning. Brockett and Hiemstra's Personal Responsibility Orientation model was built expressly to keep these apart, treating the instructional process and the learner characteristic as two components under the umbrella of personal responsibility (Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991). Candy's comprehensive analysis likewise parsed the term into several distinct meanings — among them learner autonomy as a personal quality and learner-control as a mode of instruction — warning that treating them as one produces much of the field's confusion (Candy, 1991).
Self-directed learning is closely tied to the theory of adult learning. Knowles's andragogy took the adult's growing self-concept as a self-directing person to be a defining premise, so that self-directed learning became one of the two pillars — alongside andragogy itself — on which a distinctively adult learning theory was built (Merriam, 2001). Its empirical warrant, though, predates the theory: Tough's studies of “learning projects” documented that adults routinely undertake sustained, deliberate learning outside any institution, and that most such projects are planned by the learner (Tough, 1971).

Types of Self-Directed Learning as Topic
In the Medical Subject Headings vocabulary, Self-Directed Learning as Topic is classified as a kind of learning (its parent descriptor) and carries one narrower descriptor beneath it. MeSH is an indexing classification built to organize the literature, not a theory of the psychology of learning, so its single child reflects how publications are catalogued rather than an exhaustive taxonomy of self-directed methods; the theoretical models treated in the next section cut across it.
The one direct subtype is Programmed Instructions as Topic, the literature on programmed instruction — a mid-twentieth-century method in which material is broken into small steps, each requiring an active response and immediate feedback before the learner proceeds, so that a learner can work through a subject at an individual pace without a live instructor. It is filed under self-directed learning because it shifts the moment-to-moment control of pacing and progression to the learner. Models of Self-Directed Learning
Three influential models give the construct structure. Grow's Staged Self-Directed Learning model treats self-direction as a developmental progression and asks the teacher to match style to stage: dependent learners (S1) need an authoritative coach, interested learners (S2) a motivator, involved learners (S3) a facilitator, and self-directed learners (S4) a delegating consultant. The model's central claim is that a mismatch — a directive teacher with an autonomous learner, or a hands-off teacher with a dependent one — impairs learning, so good teaching moves learners toward greater self-direction rather than assuming or ignoring it (Grow, 1991).
Grow’s staged model: matching teaching to readiness
Grow numbers four learner stages and four teaching styles 1–4. The best pairing is on the diagonal (style = stage); the mismatch is the distance d = |style − stage|. Pick a learner stage and a teaching style and read the verdict. The most damaging clash is a highly self-directed learner (stage 4) with an authoritative teacher (style 1).

Garrison's comprehensive model reframes self-directed learning as the integration of three overlapping dimensions rather than a checklist of external control. Self-management concerns the external, contextual control of learning tasks; self-monitoring concerns the internal, cognitive-metacognitive responsibility for constructing meaning; and motivation governs both entering and staying with a task. The model's contribution is to insist that genuine self-direction requires all three together — a learner who manages resources but does not monitor understanding, or who monitors but lacks motivation, is not fully self-directing (Garrison, 1997).
Brockett and Hiemstra's Personal Responsibility Orientation model organizes the field along a different axis, separating self-direction as a characteristic of the instructional process from self-directedness as a characteristic of the learner, and situating both within the social context that constrains how much responsibility a learner can actually exercise (Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991). Candy's synthesis, spanning philosophy and practice, complements these by distinguishing self-direction as a personal attribute, as the willingness to manage one's own instruction, as learner-control in formal settings, and as autonomous pursuit of learning outside institutions (Candy, 1991).
Self-Directed Versus Self-Regulated Learning
Self-directed learning is routinely confused with self-regulated learning, but the two constructs operate at different grain sizes. Self-regulated learning, as developed in educational and cognitive psychology, describes the cyclical processes — forethought, performance, and self-reflection — by which a learner controls cognition, affect, and effort within a task or assignment, typically one set by someone else (Zimmerman, 2002). Self-directed learning concerns control over the whole project: not merely how a learner studies for an assigned exam, but whether, what, why, and how they choose to learn in the first place. Self-direction therefore encompasses the design of the learning enterprise, whereas self-regulation concerns its execution (Loeng, 2020).
Garrison’s model: self-direction as the weakest link
Garrison holds that self-direction is the integration of three dimensions — self-management, self-monitoring, and motivation — and that all three are required. So the realized level of self-direction tracks the weakest dimension, not the average: raise a strong one and nothing changes; raise the weakest and the whole rises.
A further step beyond self-direction is heutagogy, or self-determined learning, in which learners set not only the means but the goals and even the questions, and evaluate their own progress against standards they help define. Blaschke positions heutagogy as a developmental extension of andragogy and self-directed learning, appropriate to networked environments where learners must be capable, not merely competent, and where the curriculum itself is negotiable (Blaschke, 2012). The three ideas form a rough progression of increasing learner control: self-regulation within a set task, self-direction over the learning project, and self-determination over the goals themselves.

Measuring Self-Directedness
Because self-directedness is treated as a learner characteristic, researchers have built instruments to measure it. The most widely used is Guglielmino's Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS), which operationalizes readiness as a profile of attitudes, values, and abilities — openness to learning opportunities, self-concept as an effective learner, initiative and independence, informed acceptance of responsibility for one's learning, love of learning, creativity, orientation to the future, and problem-solving ability. By turning a diffuse disposition into a summed score, the scale made self-directedness a variable that could be correlated with performance and used to compare learners, and it has anchored a large empirical literature despite continuing debate over its factor structure (Loeng, 2020).
Instruments describe learners; they do not by themselves develop self-direction. A parallel applied literature asks how instruction can build self-directed learners, particularly in professional and health-science education, where graduates must continue learning long after formal training ends. Robinson and Persky review how programs can scaffold the transition — gradually transferring responsibility, teaching the metacognitive skills of goal-setting and self-evaluation, and providing feedback on the learning process rather than only its product — while noting that simply removing structure does not produce self-direction and can leave less-ready learners adrift (Robinson & Persky, 2020).
Worked Example
Grow's Staged Self-Directed Learning model can be made quantitative by scoring the distance between a learner's stage and a teacher's style. Number the four stages and the four matching styles 1 through 4, so a learner at stage L is best served by a teacher at style T = L. Define the mismatch as d = |T − L|. A match (d = 0) is optimal; Grow argues that large mismatches are the damaging ones, and that a mismatch is more severe when the teacher is more directive than the learner needs (a “too-controlling” pairing) than the reverse.
Take a stage-2 learner (interested but still dependent, L = 2) placed with a stage-4 delegating consultant (T = 4): d = |4 − 2| = 2, but here the teacher is less directive than the learner needs, so the learner flounders without enough structure. Now take a stage-4 self-directed learner (L = 4) placed with a stage-1 authoritative lecturer (T = 1): d = |1 − 4| = 3, the maximum possible, and the teacher is far more directive than the learner needs — the classic “resentful autonomous learner versus controlling teacher” clash Grow describes as the worst case. The scores rank the two problems correctly: the second pairing (d = 3) is more disruptive than the first (d = 2), and both are worse than any adjacent pairing (d = 1).
The point of the arithmetic is not the exact number but its lesson: because severity grows with the gap, effective teaching tracks the learner's changing readiness rather than adopting one fixed style, moving from directive to delegating as self-direction develops (Grow, 1991). This is the logic the accompanying matrix demonstration makes visible: the on-diagonal cells are the matches, and the severity of a mismatch rises with its distance off that diagonal.
Discussion
Self-directed learning has endured because it captures something real and consequential: adults do, in fact, plan and pursue most of their own learning, and the capacity to do so well is unevenly distributed and can be taught (Tough, 1971; Robinson & Persky, 2020). The construct's long history is also a history of conceptual tidying — separating process from disposition, distinguishing self-direction from self-regulation and self-determination, and resisting the temptation to treat a rich family of ideas as a single trait (Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991; Candy, 1991). Where early writing sometimes implied that more learner control is always better, the mature view is conditional: the right degree of self-direction depends on the learner's readiness and the demands of the material (Grow, 1991; Garrison, 1997).
That conditional view is what connects self-directed learning to the wider psychology of learning and motivation. Garrison's insistence that motivation and metacognitive self-monitoring are integral, not optional, ties the construct to research on how goals are set and progress is tracked, and it explains why removing structure without building capacity backfires (Garrison, 1997). As a practical matter, the construct has migrated from adult education into professional training, medicine, and the design of technology-supported learning, where the ability to keep learning independently is treated less as a luxury than as a core competence of a changing world (Morris, 2019).
Current Directions
Recent work reframes self-directed learning as a fundamental competence for a world in which knowledge changes faster than any curriculum can track, arguing that education should cultivate the disposition and skills of self-direction as an explicit outcome rather than assuming they emerge on their own (Morris, 2019). This has sharpened interest in the boundary between self-directed learning and its extensions: heutagogy, or self-determined learning, is increasingly studied as the model best suited to open, networked, and learner-negotiated environments, where the goals themselves are not fixed in advance (Blaschke, 2012).
A second, applied front concerns how self-direction is deliberately developed and supported. In health-professions and higher education, the emphasis has moved from measuring readiness to scaffolding it — sequencing the transfer of responsibility, teaching goal-setting and self-evaluation directly, and giving feedback on the process of learning — with explicit attention to learners who are not yet ready for autonomy and can be harmed by its premature imposition (Robinson & Persky, 2020). Across both fronts the construct is being treated less as a stable trait to be assessed and more as a capacity to be built, which returns the field to the practical question that motivated it: how to help people learn well on their own (Loeng, 2020).
