Abstract
Psychological feedback, which MeSH classifies under psychotherapy, is information returned to a person about the results of their behaviour that can shape what they do next. Since the mid-twentieth century it has been studied across motor learning as knowledge of results, across organisations as performance appraisal, and across education as formative assessment. A landmark meta-analysis established the counterintuitive result that feedback interventions raise performance on average yet reduce it in more than a third of cases, depending on whether the message draws attention to the task or to the self. Control-theory models recast feedback as the error signal of a negative-feedback loop that shrinks the discrepancy between a current state and a reference standard. This article examines the mechanism, the moderators that flip its sign, and its major applied forms.

Few ideas in psychology are as intuitively trusted as feedback: tell people how they are doing and they will do better. The empirical record is more interesting than the intuition. Feedback is genuinely powerful, but its effect is not uniformly positive, and the same message can improve one learner and derail another. Understanding when and why feedback works has occupied motor-learning researchers, organisational psychologists, and educators for half a century, and their converging answer is that feedback is not a nutrient the mind absorbs but a signal it must interpret against a goal (Kluger & DeNisi, 1996).

What Psychological Feedback Is
In its most general sense, feedback is the return of information about the outcome of a process to the source of that process, so the output can be adjusted. Applied to behaviour, psychological feedback is the information a person receives about the gap between what they did and some standard, reference, or goal. The signal can come from the physical result of an action, from another person, or from an instrument; what makes it feedback rather than mere stimulation is that it is about the actor's own prior output and can be used to modify the next one.
The concept entered scientific psychology through several doors at once. In the study of skilled movement it appeared as knowledge of results, the extrinsic information a learner is given about the outcome of a movement, which early reviews treated as the single most important variable in motor learning before a critical reappraisal showed that frequent, immediate knowledge of results can create a dependency that harms long-term retention (Salmoni et al., 1984). In organisations it appeared as performance feedback, the information employees receive about how their work is evaluated, whose behavioural consequences were mapped in an influential review of individual feedback at work (Ilgen et al., 1979). These traditions describe the same underlying object: a returned signal that closes a loop between action and adjustment.

Types of Psychological Feedback
MeSH files Feedback, Psychological under two parents at once: psychotherapy, where feedback names the return of information within a therapeutic relationship, and adaptation, psychological, where it names a regulatory process. That dual placement is an indexing decision about how the literature is catalogued, not a claim that feedback is a species of psychotherapy; the concept is broader than either parent. Within the classification the descriptor resolves into a single direct subtype, distinguished by the class of signal it closes the loop around.

The narrower MeSH tree understates how the concept is actually partitioned in research, where feedback is typed less by its signal than by its function. The most consequential distinction is between formative feedback, delivered during learning to guide the next attempt, and summative feedback, delivered afterward to certify a level of attainment; the formative kind is the more powerful lever on subsequent performance (Shute, 2008). The formative concept was given its foundational definition by Sadler, who held that feedback becomes formative only when the learner can grasp the standard being aimed at, compare their current work against it, and take action to close the gap between the two (Sadler, 1989) — the same three requirements the control loop states in mechanical terms. A second, orthogonal cut concerns the level a feedback message addresses. Hattie and Timperley distinguish feedback about the task, about the process used to do it, about the learner's self-regulation, and about the self as a person, and argue that the middle two levels are the most effective while praise directed at the self is the least (Hattie & Timperley, 2007). Their model organises feedback around three questions a learner should be able to answer: where am I going, how am I going, and where to next.

The Four Levels a Feedback Message Can Address
Choose the level a feedback message targets. The same performance can be addressed at any of the four; the level, not the sentiment, is what largely decides the effect.

When Feedback Helps and When It Harms
The defining discovery of modern feedback research is that feedback is not reliably beneficial. In the largest synthesis of the question, Kluger and DeNisi assembled 607 effect sizes from studies of feedback interventions and found that although the average effect on performance was positive and moderate, more than a third of the interventions actually reduced performance (Kluger & DeNisi, 1996). Their explanation, feedback intervention theory, locates the cause in where feedback directs attention. Behaviour is regulated by a hierarchy of goals; feedback that keeps attention on the task and on the details of how to close the gap tends to help, whereas feedback that shifts attention to the self, threatening or inflating self-esteem, diverts cognitive resources away from the task and can harm it. This is why personal praise and personal criticism, which feel like strong feedback, are often the least useful kinds.
The same theme recurs across the applied literatures. In organisations, feedback about performance changes behaviour only when the recipient accepts it as accurate and is motivated to respond, so its behavioural consequences depend on the source, the sign, and the recipient's own goals rather than on the information alone (Ilgen et al., 1979). In education, a meta-analysis of feedback in computer-based learning environments found that its benefit depended heavily on what the feedback contained and when it arrived, with elaborated feedback that explained the correct answer outperforming a bare verdict of right or wrong (Van der Kleij et al., 2015). Feedback can also carry a motivational cost: a meta-analysis of reward and feedback effects on intrinsic motivation found that controlling forms of positive feedback, experienced as pressure rather than information, could undermine the very interest that sustains effort (Deci et al., 1999).

Feedback as a Control Loop
The mechanism beneath all these findings is the negative-feedback loop borrowed from cybernetics. Carver and Scheier proposed control theory as a framework for self-regulation in which behaviour is governed by a hierarchy of feedback loops, each comparing a current state against a reference value and acting to reduce the difference (Carver & Scheier, 1982). The loop has four parts: an input that senses the present state, a comparator that measures the discrepancy from the standard, an output that changes behaviour, and the effect of that behaviour on the state, which is sensed again. When the loop is negative, it is discrepancy-reducing: it drives the state toward the standard, as a thermostat drives room temperature toward its set point. Feedback, in this account, is precisely the sensed value that the comparator uses.
Two properties of the loop matter for behaviour. The first is the reference value itself: feedback is meaningless without a standard to compare against, which is why goal-setting and feedback are inseparable in practice. Goal-setting theory establishes that specific, difficult goals raise performance in large part by sharpening the standard against which feedback is evaluated (Locke & Latham, 2002), which is also why the same result feels like success against one goal and failure against another. The second is the gain of the loop, the fraction of the sensed discrepancy that is corrected on each cycle. A high-gain loop closes the gap quickly but can overshoot and oscillate; a low-gain loop approaches the standard smoothly but slowly. The demonstration below varies the gain to show how many cycles the loop needs to reduce an initial discrepancy, the same arithmetic developed in the worked example that follows.

Set the loop gain — the fraction of the remaining discrepancy corrected each cycle. The trace starts at 40 and is driven toward the reference standard of 100.
Worked Example
Consider a negative-feedback loop with a reference standard of 100, a starting state of 40, and a gain of 0.3, meaning that each cycle corrects 30% of the remaining discrepancy. The initial discrepancy is 100 - 40 = 60. On the first cycle the state rises by 0.3 x 60 = 18, to 58, leaving a discrepancy of 42. On the second cycle it rises by 0.3 x 42 = 12.6, to 70.6, leaving 29.4. Continuing, the state reaches 79.42 after three cycles, 85.594 after four, and 89.916 after five, at which point the discrepancy has fallen to 10.084. The loop has therefore closed (60 - 10.084) / 60 = 83.2% of the original gap in five cycles. Because each cycle multiplies the remaining discrepancy by 0.7, the discrepancy follows 60 x 0.7 raised to the power of the cycle number, and its half-life is ln(0.5) / ln(0.7) = 1.94 cycles: the gap to the standard halves roughly every two cycles regardless of where it started. The DiscrepancyLoopDemo above reproduces this exactly; raising the gain shortens the half-life, and a gain above 1 makes the loop overshoot the standard before settling.
Discussion
The through-line of a century of feedback research is that information about results is necessary but not sufficient for improvement. What converts the signal into a behaviour change is the interpretive machinery around it: a standard to compare against, an attribution of the gap to something the person can control, and enough motivational safety that the message is heard as guidance rather than as a verdict on the self. This is why the most robust practical recommendations are convergent across fields, that feedback should be specific to the task and the process, should be timed to inform the next attempt, and should avoid making the person the topic. The motor-learning caution is a useful corrective to the intuition that more feedback is always better: because knowledge of results can become a crutch, feedback that is too frequent or too immediate can build a dependency that collapses when the feedback is withdrawn (Salmoni et al., 1984).
The control-theory framing unifies these observations without pretending to settle every question. It explains why goals and feedback are inseparable, why discrepancies drive behaviour, and why the sign and gain of the loop matter, but it leaves open the harder problem of how people set and revise their reference standards, and why the same discrepancy motivates one person and discourages another. Contemporary syntheses have accordingly moved from asking whether feedback works to modelling the elements that determine its effect, integrating the message, the recipient, and the context into a single account (Lipnevich & Panadero, 2021).
Current Directions
The most active shift in feedback research is from the message to the recipient. Where the classic studies treated feedback as something delivered to a passive learner, current work treats it as something the learner must actively process, and asks what enables that processing: a systematic review reframed effective feedback around the learner's recipience, cataloguing the skills and dispositions that let a person engage with feedback rather than deflect it (Winstone et al., 2017). The meta-analytic picture has also been refreshed: a re-analysis of educational feedback research confirmed a moderate average effect while showing that the variance around it is large and systematic, so that the practical question is which feedback works for which task rather than whether feedback works at all (Wisniewski et al., 2020). Alongside the empirical work, theorists have tried to consolidate the field's many overlapping schemes into a single integrative model, specifying the elements of a feedback episode, the message, the source, the recipient, and their interaction, so that competing findings can be located within one framework (Panadero & Lipnevich, 2022). A recurring practical thread across this work is the proactive, information-seeking side of feedback first identified decades earlier: people do not merely receive feedback, they actively seek it as a resource for self-evaluation (Ashford & Cummings, 1983).

- More feedback is always better.
- Frequent, immediate knowledge of results can build a dependency that inflates practice performance but harms long-term retention once the feedback is removed (Salmoni et al., 1984). The useful quantity of feedback is the amount that supports independent performance, not the maximum available.
- Positive feedback can never hurt.
- Feedback that draws attention to the self, including praise, can divert resources from the task and reduce performance, and controlling praise can undermine intrinsic motivation (Kluger & DeNisi, 1996; Deci et al., 1999).
- Feedback is just information, so its content is what matters.
