Abstract
Emotional adjustment is the process by which a person adapts emotionally to stress, loss, illness, and the demands of a changing life, keeping feeling and its expression manageable rather than overwhelming. It is studied through three traditions: the transactional model of stress and coping, which locates adjustment in how an event is appraised and met; the process model of emotion regulation, which specifies where in an unfolding emotion a person can intervene; and the resilience literature, which asks why most people adapt well to adversity. This article sets out these frameworks, the measures and individual differences that separate good adjustment from poor, and the shift from cataloguing strategies to prizing their flexible, context-matched use. Three interactive demonstrations let a reader appraise a stressor, regulate an emotion across the process model, and trace a resilience trajectory.

Emotional adjustment is the ongoing work of adapting one's emotional life to circumstances — meeting stress, loss, conflict, illness, and change in ways that keep feeling and its expression proportionate and usable rather than derailing. It is not a single trait or a fixed endpoint but a process, and a person is well adjusted not because they feel little but because their emotions, and the actions those emotions drive, remain roughly fitted to what the situation actually requires. Psychology has approached this process from three directions that this article treats in turn: the study of coping, which asks what a person does when a demand exceeds their resources; the study of emotion regulation, which asks how a person shapes which emotions they have, when, and how they express them; and the study of resilience, which asks why most people adjust well even to severe adversity. The three overlap heavily — coping and emotion regulation are close cousins, and resilience is in large part their successful operation over time — but each supplies a distinct vocabulary and a distinct body of evidence, and together they make emotional adjustment one of the better-mapped processes in the psychology of emotion.

Types of Emotional Adjustment

The Transactional Model: Appraisal and Coping
The foundational framework for emotional adjustment is the transactional model of stress set out by Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman, which treats stress not as a property of events but as a relationship between a person and a situation that the person judges to tax or exceed their resources. Central to the model is appraisal: a first, primary appraisal asks whether an encounter is irrelevant, benign, or stressful — and if stressful, whether it represents harm already done, a threat of future harm, or a challenge holding the prospect of gain — while a secondary appraisal asks what can be done about it, taking stock of the resources and options available. Adjustment, on this account, flows from appraisal: the same objective event produces different emotions and different responses depending on whether it is read as an uncontrollable threat or a masterable challenge (Folkman & Lazarus, 1980).
What a person does in response is coping, defined as the changing cognitive and behavioural efforts to manage demands appraised as taxing. Lazarus and Folkman drew the field's most durable distinction between two broad families: problem-focused coping, which acts on the situation itself — planning, gathering information, removing the obstacle — and emotion-focused coping, which acts on the feeling the situation provokes — reframing it, seeking comfort, distracting attention, or accepting what cannot be changed. Neither family is superior in the abstract; their value is conditional on control. When a stressor is controllable, problem-focused coping tends to serve adjustment; when it is genuinely uncontrollable, emotion-focused coping that reduces distress without wasting effort on the unchangeable is often the better fit (Folkman & Lazarus, 1980). From appraisal to coping: matching the strategy to the situation
The transactional model treats stress as a relationship a person appraises. Set the primary appraisal — how threatening the stressor seems — and the secondary appraisal — how far it can be controlled. The model projects the adjustment each coping family would yield and names the better fit: problem-focused coping pays off when a situation is controllable, emotion-focused coping when it is not.

The Process Model of Emotion Regulation
Where the coping tradition grew from the study of stress, a parallel tradition grew from the study of emotion itself, and its organising framework is the process model of emotion regulation developed by James Gross. The model begins from the idea that an emotion unfolds over time in a sequence — a situation arises, it draws attention, it is appraised as meaning something, and that meaning generates a coordinated emotional response — and it observes that this sequence offers distinct points of leverage. Gross identified five families of regulation strategy, ordered by where in the emotion-generative sequence they act: situation selection (approaching or avoiding circumstances for their likely emotional effect), situation modification (changing a situation one is already in), attentional deployment (directing attention toward or away from emotional features, as in distraction), cognitive change (altering the meaning of a situation, of which reappraisal is the central case), and response modulation (influencing the emotional response once it is underway, of which expressive suppression is the central case) (Gross, 1998; Gross, 2015).
The model's most consequential division is temporal. The first four families are antecedent-focused: they act before the emotional response is fully generated and so can change the emotion at its source. Response modulation is response-focused: it acts after the emotion is underway and can alter its outward signs without necessarily touching the feeling itself. This distinction predicts, and a large body of evidence confirms, an asymmetry between the two most studied strategies. Reappraisal, by changing the meaning of a situation early, reduces both the experience and the expression of a negative emotion at comparatively little cognitive or physiological cost. The process model: where you intervene changes what you change
An unregulated emotion arrives with an experienced and an expressed intensity of 100. Choose a regulation family and set how hard it works. The four antecedent-focused families act before the response forms, so they lower feeling and display together; response modulation acts late, cutting the display but leaving the feeling intact. The defaults reproduce the worked example.
Antecedent-focused regulation via Cognitive change (reappraisal) at 40% leaves experienced 60 and expressed 60, a display-to-feeling gap of 0. Working at the source, it reduces feeling and display in step, so the person is genuinely less distressed.

Individual Differences and Regulatory Flexibility
People differ reliably in how they regulate emotion, and those differences predict how well they adjust. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) measures habitual use of reappraisal and suppression, and across many samples greater reappraisal use is associated with more positive emotion, better relationships, and higher well-being, while greater suppression use is associated with the opposite profile (Gross & John, 2003). A meta-analytic map of the field confirms the broad valence of these strategies: reappraisal, problem solving, and acceptance tend to be adaptive, while suppression, avoidance, and especially rumination tend to be maladaptive, and the maladaptive strategies show the tighter links to psychopathology (Aldao et al., 2010). A later meta-analysis of how the strategies themselves cluster found that they are not cleanly independent, which cautions against reading any single strategy as good or bad in isolation (Naragon-Gainey et al., 2017).
That caution is the leading edge of a shift in how the field thinks about adjustment. Labelling strategies as adaptive or maladaptive in general obscures that their value is contextual — the same reappraisal that helps in an uncontrollable situation can be counterproductive when a person could and should act instead, and even suppression has its uses when an emotional display would be costly. The corrective concept is regulatory flexibility: the ability to read a context, select a strategy fitted to it from a broad repertoire, monitor whether it is working, and switch when feedback says it is not (Bonanno & Burton, 2013; Aldao et al., 2015). Flexibility reframes good adjustment as a competence of matching and switching rather than a fixed inventory of correct strategies. It also explains a puzzling finding that a strategy-by-strategy view cannot: reappraisal, the reliably adaptive strategy, can carry hidden costs when it is applied indiscriminately to situations that call for action rather than acceptance (Ford & Troy, 2019). Figure 1 contrasts the older strategy-inventory view of adjustment with the flexibility view, and situates the two headline strategies within it.

Adjustment, Resilience, and Psychopathology
Followed over time, emotional adjustment becomes the question of resilience: why, in the aftermath of adversity, do most people adapt well? The developmental study of children facing serious risk supplied the first surprising answer — that resilience is not a rare gift of extraordinary individuals but arises from ordinary, widely distributed adaptive systems, a conclusion Ann Masten summarised in the phrase ordinary magic (Masten, 2001). Work with bereaved and trauma-exposed adults reached a parallel conclusion: George Bonanno showed that a resilient trajectory — a stable, healthy level of functioning through and after loss — is the most common outcome, more common than the delayed, recovering, or chronically distressed trajectories with which it is often confused (Bonanno, 2004). Resilience, on this evidence, is a set of trajectories of adjustment rather than a single trait, and defining it precisely across disciplines remains an active problem (Southwick et al., 2014).
The mechanisms of resilience are increasingly located in emotion regulation and appraisal — the very processes the earlier sections described. One of the best-established is the strategic recruitment of positive emotion: the broaden-and-build theory holds that positive emotions widen the momentary thought-action repertoire and accrue durable coping resources, and resilient individuals have been shown to harness positive emotion — finding benefit, using humour — to speed their physiological recovery from a stressor (Tugade & Fredrickson, 2004). A neurobiological framework proposes that a person's characteristic style of positively appraising situations is a general protective factor that buffers against a range of stress-related disorders (Kalisch et al., 2017), and a recent synthesis explicitly recasts resilience as an affect-regulation achievement: the capacity to deploy regulation flexibly and effectively is what allows most people to maintain well-being under adversity (Troy et al., 2023). The same logic runs in reverse at the clinical end. Because emotion regulation is central to adjustment, its failure is central to disorder: difficulties in regulation cut across the diagnostic categories, so that maladaptive strategies such as rumination and avoidance are elevated in depression, the anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and substance use alike (Sheppes et al., 2015). Emotional adjustment and its disorders are, on this view, two ends of one continuum of regulatory success. The third demonstration lets a reader trace how a chosen adjustment profile — the flexibility of the regulatory repertoire and the controllability of the adversity — shapes a trajectory of functioning over time.
Trajectories of adjustment: resilient, recovering, or chronic
An adversity strikes at week 0 and functioning falls. Set the flexibility of the person's regulatory repertoire and the controllability of the adversity, and watch the trajectory of functioning over the following year. A flexible repertoire meeting a workable adversity yields the resilient trajectory that is, in fact, the most common outcome.
Trajectory: Recovery. Functioning drops to 59 at onset and settles near 83 by week 52. A deeper drop followed by a gradual return marks the recovery trajectory — adjustment that takes time but arrives.
The resilience score weights repertoire flexibility above adversity controllability; drop depth, recovery rate, and final level are derived from it. The curves are an illustrative model of the trajectory literature, not fitted data.
Worked Example
Consider a single emotional episode and compare what reappraisal and suppression do to it, using the antecedent-versus-response logic of the process model. Suppose a provoking event would, unregulated, generate an emotion whose experienced intensity and expressed intensity are each 100 units on an arbitrary scale.
Reappraisal acts early, at the cognitive-change stage, changing the meaning of the event before the response is fully formed. Suppose it attenuates the generated emotion by 40%. Because it works at the source, it reduces both components in step: experienced intensity becomes 100 × (1 − 0.40) = 60, and expressed intensity likewise becomes 60. The person feels less and shows less, and the two remain matched.
Suppression acts late, at the response stage, inhibiting only the outward display. Suppose it cuts the expressed component by 60% but, acting after the emotion is generated, leaves the experienced component untouched. Expressed intensity becomes 100 × (1 − 0.60) = 40, while experienced intensity stays at 100. An observer now reads an intensity of 40, but the person still feels 100 — a display-to-feeling gap of 100 − 40 = 60 units, against a gap of 60 − 60 = 0 for reappraisal.
The two strategies therefore succeed on different measures. If the goal is to look composed, suppression wins narrowly: expressed 40 is lower than reappraisal's 60. But if the goal is to be less distressed — the goal that emotional adjustment is ultimately about — reappraisal wins decisively: experienced 60 against suppression's 100. Adding the documented costs of suppression, which this arithmetic does not price in — impaired memory for the event and heightened physiological activation — reappraisal is the better-adjusting strategy on every dimension except momentary masking. This is exactly the asymmetry the individual-difference evidence reports, and it is why habitual reappraisal predicts better well-being than habitual suppression (Gross & John, 2003). The flexibility caveat still applies: the numbers assume a situation best met by down-regulating feeling, and a controllable stressor that called for action rather than acceptance could reverse the verdict.
Discussion
Emotional adjustment illustrates how a single process can be approached from several research traditions that turn out to describe the same thing in different vocabularies. The transactional model's emotion-focused coping, the process model's antecedent-focused regulation, and the resilience literature's protective appraisal style are not three phenomena but three descriptions of how people intervene between an event and their emotional response to it (Folkman & Lazarus, 1980; Gross, 2015; Kalisch et al., 2017). The convergence is itself a finding: it suggests that adjustment really does turn on a small number of leverage points — what one approaches, what one attends to, how one construes it, and what one does with the response once it arrives — and that the various literatures have been triangulating the same underlying structure.
The field's centre of gravity has shifted accordingly. The early questions were about what people do — cataloguing coping strategies and regulation families and sorting them into adaptive and maladaptive. The current questions are about fit and flexibility — when a strategy helps, how people match strategy to context, and how they switch when a strategy fails (Bonanno & Burton, 2013; Ford & Troy, 2019). This shift matters beyond theory. It reframes clinical intervention away from installing correct strategies and toward building a broad repertoire and the metacognitive skill to deploy it, and it reframes resilience from a trait some people happen to have into a regulatory competence that most people already exercise and that can, in principle, be taught (Troy et al., 2023). Emotional adjustment, on the modern account, is less a matter of having the right feelings than of governing feeling flexibly enough to keep meeting a world that keeps changing.
Current Directions
The most active line of current work formalises regulatory flexibility and tries to measure it, moving past the counting of strategies toward indices of how well a person's regulation is matched to context and how readily they switch when it is not (Aldao et al., 2015). A second strand re-examines the strategies once treated as settled: reappraisal, long the exemplary adaptive strategy, is now studied for its boundary conditions and hidden costs, with evidence that its benefits depend on whether a situation is one to accept or one to change (Ford & Troy, 2019). A third integrates the emotion-regulation and resilience literatures directly, recasting resilience as an affect-regulation phenomenon and asking which regulatory capacities predict who maintains functioning under adversity (Troy et al., 2023). Underlying all three is a continuing effort to clarify the field's basic structure — how the many named strategies actually relate to one another empirically, so that theory rests on the observed covariation among strategies rather than on intuitive groupings (Naragon-Gainey et al., 2017; McRae & Gross, 2020). The through-line is a move from description toward mechanism and measurement: from listing what people do toward modelling when and why it works.

- Good emotional adjustment means feeling calm or positive most of the time.
- Adjustment is about the fit between emotion and situation, not the suppression of strong feeling.
