What Behaviorism Is
Behaviorism is defined by a claim about the subject matter and method of psychology rather than by a single theory of any one behavior. Classical conditioning: acquiring and extinguishing a response
A neutral stimulus is paired with one that reliably produces a reflex. Over paired trials the conditioned response grows on a negatively accelerated curve toward its asymptote; withdraw the unconditioned stimulus and it extinguishes back toward zero. Switch to the uncorrelated control and the same two stimuli, now unpredictive of each other, build no association at all — it is the contingency, not mere pairing in time, that drives the learning.

Conditioning and the Laws of Learning
The empirical core of behaviorism is a small set of learning principles discovered in the laboratory and stated with enough precision to be tested quantitatively. The first is classical, or respondent, conditioning, described by Pavlov, in which a neutral stimulus that reliably precedes a biologically significant one comes to elicit a response resembling the reflex the significant stimulus produces (Pavlov, 1927). Pavlov's dogs, salivating to a signal that predicted food, gave behaviorism its model of how an environmental contingency installs a new response, and Watson's demonstration that a fear response could be conditioned in an infant extended the principle from the physiological reflex to emotional behavior (Watson & Rayner, 1920).
The second principle concerns behavior that operates on the environment to produce consequences. Thorndike, studying cats escaping from puzzle boxes, formulated the law of effect: responses followed by a satisfying state of affairs are strengthened, and responses followed by an annoying one are weakened, so that adaptive behavior is selected by its consequences through trial and error rather than inserted by insight (Thorndike, 1898). Schedules of reinforcement: the cumulative record
The cumulative record plots total responses against time; its slope is the response rate, and each tick marks a reinforcer. Each of the four basic schedules imposes a different rule for delivering reinforcement, and each produces a different, reproducible pattern. The fixed-interval scallop and the steady ratio rates are signatures the behaviorists read straight off the record.
Fixed ratio (FR-10) produces a high, steady rate with a brief pause after each reinforcer (break-and-run). At 2.0 responses/s an FR-10 requirement delivers a reinforcer every 5.0 s (10 ÷ 2.0); double the rate and the interval halves — on ratio schedules the animal controls how fast reinforcers arrive. Behaviorism's dominance was broken not by a return to introspection but by findings from within the animal laboratory that a pure stimulus-response account could not absorb. Tolman's rats, allowed to explore a maze without reward, showed no gain in performance until a reward was introduced, whereupon their error rate dropped abruptly to the level of animals rewarded from the start (Tolman, 1948). This latent learning implied that the animals had acquired knowledge of the maze — a cognitive map — during the unrewarded trials, learning that reinforcement had not produced and that only later performance revealed. The reports of behaviorism's death are, however, exaggerated. As a general theory of mind it was superseded, but as a research tradition it neither vanished nor stood still: contemporary behavior analysis comprises several distinct positions rather than a single orthodoxy (Araiba, 2020), and radical behaviorism continues to be articulated as a coherent philosophy of science distinct from the methodological variant the cognitive revolution rejected (Moore, 2022). Latent learning: knowledge without reinforcement
Three groups of rats run the same maze for 17 days. The rewarded control improves steadily; the group never rewarded stays error-prone. The delayed group is rewarded only from the day you set — and when the incentive appears its errors collapse almost at once, to the control's level or below. The learning was already there, acquired unrewarded and merely unexpressed: the reward changed performance, not knowledge.
The delayed group averaged about 7.0 errors the day before reward, tracking the never-rewarded group; within a few days of the day-11 incentive it fell to 1.6, essentially matching the control's 2.0. That abrupt drop is the signature of latent learning — a distinction between learning and performance that strict reinforcement theory cannot draw. Worked Example
Consider how a schedule of reinforcement controls behavior, the phenomenon the second demonstration displays. Suppose a pigeon is reinforced on a fixed-ratio schedule of FR-10: every tenth peck delivers food. The defining feature of ratio schedules is that reinforcement depends only on the number of responses, so the faster the animal responds, the sooner the next reinforcer arrives, and ratio schedules therefore generate high, steady response rates. If the pigeon pecks at two responses per second, it earns a reinforcer every five seconds; double the rate and it halves the delay.
Contrast this with a fixed-interval schedule, FI-30 seconds, on which the first response after 30 seconds is reinforced and responses before then accomplish nothing. Here responding early in the interval cannot advance the reinforcer, and the adaptive pattern is to wait, then accelerate as the interval elapses, producing the characteristic scallop in the cumulative record: a post-reinforcement pause followed by a rising rate. The two schedules deliver reinforcement on entirely different rules, and the animal's behavior conforms precisely to the contingency each imposes.
The general lesson the behaviorists drew is that the pattern of behavior is a lawful function of the schedule rather than of anything supposed to lie behind it. Replacing the fixed rules with variable ones — reinforcing on average every tenth response, or every 30 seconds on average — removes the predictability that produces pauses and yields the steady, extinction-resistant responding that variable schedules are known for. The same analysis that predicts the pigeon's scallop predicts the persistence of behavior maintained by intermittent reinforcement in everyday life, which is the sense in which the experimental analysis of behavior claimed to be a general science of its subject (Skinner, 1938; Skinner, 1953).
