Achievement is success in bringing an effort to a desired end: the level of accomplishment a person attains, especially in scholastic and occupational domains. MeSH classifies achievement under educational psychology, and it is the central outcome of motivation directed at a standard of excellence. Psychology studies it less as the accomplishment itself than as achievement motivation, the disposition to strive for competence against such a standard. This article treats achievement as a worked case, covering how it was first measured as a need, how the expectancy of success and the value of the goal combine to predict striving, and how the goals a person adopts, mastering a task or outperforming others, approaching success or avoiding failure, shape the effort, emotion, and attainment that follow.

A grade, a promotion, a personal best: each is an achievement in the ordinary sense, an outcome attained. What Achievement Is

Achievement, in the sense psychology gives the term, is not merely doing well but doing well against a standard of excellence that the person has, at some level, adopted as their own. The founding research program made this concrete by treating the disposition to strive for such standards as a measurable personality variable, the need for achievement or n Ach, inferred not from what people say about themselves but from the imaginative content they produce. The risk-taking model: why intermediate difficulty is decisive

Atkinson makes the resultant achievement tendency the motive balance (success minus fear of failure) times the probability of success times its incentive value, where an easy win is worth little and a long shot much, so incentive value is one minus the probability. At the 50-50 task the resultant tendency is +0.13 approaches intermediate risk: success-oriented: the pull is strongest on the 50-50 task, where the outcome is most uncertain. Theories of Achievement Motivation

The need-based account explained who strives, but not why the same person strives in one situation and not another, and the next wave of theory made achievement behavior a rational calculation. Expectancy-value theory holds that the tendency to pursue an achievement goal is the product of two subjective quantities: the expectancy that effort will yield success, and the value of that success to the person. What made the modern form powerful was the decomposition of value into components that could be measured and moved separately, so that subjective task value comprises the intrinsic interest a task holds, its usefulness for other goals, its importance to one's sense of self, and the cost of pursuing it in effort, anxiety, and forgone alternatives (Wigfield & Eccles, 2000). Because expectancy and value are multiplied, an achievement goal that is highly valued but seems unattainable, or attainable but worthless, produces little striving; both must be present. Expectancy itself has a well-studied proximal form in self-efficacy, a person's belief in their capacity to carry out the actions a task demands, which Bandura identified as a chief determinant of whether achievement effort is initiated and sustained (Bandura, 1977).

Expectancy is not a fixed reading of the odds but a construction shaped by how a person interprets their own past. Weiner's attribution theory made the perceived causes of prior success and failure the engine of achievement motivation: an outcome is explained by a cause located somewhere along three dimensions, its locus (internal or external to the person), its stability (enduring or transient), and its controllability. The dimensions do specific work. Stability governs expectancy, so that attributing a failure to stable low ability lowers the expectancy of future success while attributing it to unstable bad luck or insufficient effort leaves expectancy intact; locus and controllability govern the achievement emotions of pride, shame, and guilt (Weiner, 1985). The practical upshot is that two students who fail the same test will differ sharply in their subsequent motivation according to the cause each assigns. Attributing a failure: how the cause shapes expectancy and emotion

Imagine a student who has just failed a test. The cause they assign to it can be placed along three dimensions. Toggle each and see the two things the theory says follow: whether the expectancy of future success changes, and which achievement emotion arises.

Attributing the failure to ability: expectancy falls a stable cause implies the failure will recur, so the expectancy of future success drops. The emotion is shame, because an internal, uncontrollable cause (low ability) yields shame, which tends to promote withdrawal. Two students who fail the same test diverge in later motivation according to the cause each assigns.

The Structure of Achievement Goals

The third wave shifted the question from how much a person is motivated to achieve to what they are trying to achieve, and it turned on a distinction between two standards of competence. A mastery goal defines success as developing one's own competence, learning, and improvement measured against oneself; a performance goal defines it as demonstrating competence relative to others, doing better than peers or avoiding looking incapable (Nicholls, 1984). The distinction predicts a broad pattern: mastery goals tend to sustain interest, persistence in the face of difficulty, and deep engagement, whereas performance goals, though they can drive strong results, make achievement contingent on comparison and leave a person vulnerable when comparison turns unfavorable. The performance category proved too coarse, because demonstrating competence and avoiding the demonstration of incompetence are motivationally opposite. Worked Example

Consider Atkinson's risk-taking model, of the kind the first demonstration computes, and use it to explain why people high in the need for achievement gravitate to tasks of moderate difficulty. The model sets the resultant achievement tendency to the difference between the two motives, the motive for success minus the motive to avoid failure, multiplied by the probability of success and by the incentive value of that success. The model's key assumption is that the incentive value of a success is inversely related to its probability: an easy win is worth little, a long-shot triumph worth much, so incentive value equals one minus the probability of success.

Take a success-oriented person for whom the motive difference is positive, say a value of one, and evaluate three tasks. An easy task with a success probability of 0.9 gives a tendency of one times 0.9 times 0.1, which is 0.09. A hard task with a probability of 0.1 gives one times 0.1 times 0.9, again 0.09. A moderate task with a probability of 0.5 gives one times 0.5 times 0.5, which is 0.25, nearly three times as strong. The resultant tendency peaks at the midpoint because the product of probability and incentive value is greatest where the outcome is most uncertain.

Now flip the motive difference to a failure-threatened person, a value of minus one. The three tasks now give tendencies of minus 0.09, minus 0.09, and minus 0.25, so the strongest avoidance falls on exactly the moderate task the achiever prefers. The single fact this makes vivid is that the same intermediate difficulty is maximally attractive to the person who approaches success and maximally aversive to the person who fears failure, which is why the two dispositions produce opposite task choices from an identical set of options (Atkinson, 1957).

Discussion

The study of achievement has been a steady movement away from treating accomplishment as a fact about the world and toward treating it as a fact about the person's construal of a task. Each wave kept what was durable in the last: the need tradition established that a disposition to strive is real, stable, and measurable; expectancy-value theory showed that the disposition is expressed only through the situation-specific beliefs a person holds about the odds and the worth of a goal; and achievement goal theory showed that even holding motivation constant, the standard of competence a person adopts changes what achievement costs and what it yields (Eccles & Wigfield, 2020). The through-line is that achievement is downstream of interpretation. A grade is an outcome; whether it becomes an achievement that fuels further striving or a failure that extinguishes it depends on the expectancy it revises, the value it confirms or denies, and the cause to which it is assigned.

That the field's practical promise has outrun its evidence in places is worth stating plainly. The mindset idea, that teaching students to view ability as improvable will raise achievement, followed directly from the goal and attribution traditions and generated an enormous intervention literature. Meta-analytic scrutiny has since tempered the early enthusiasm: the average correlation between mindset and achievement is small, and interventions produce modest effects concentrated among the students who need them most, chiefly the academically at-risk and the socioeconomically disadvantaged, rather than a broad transformation (Sisk et al., 2018). This is not a refutation so much as a calibration, and it exemplifies how the achievement literature has matured: from bold general claims toward specifying for whom, under what conditions, and through what mechanism a motivational lever actually moves attainment.

The second is the rigorous meta-analytic auditing of the field's applied claims, most visibly for growth-mindset interventions, where large preregistered trials and systematic reviews now map precisely which students benefit and which implementation conditions matter, converging on modest, targeted effects rather than universal ones (Yeager et al., 2019; Burnette et al., 2023). Running underneath both is a long-standing measurement concern, that the achievement-goal instruments in wide use do not always measure the same construct despite sharing labels, which the field continues to work to resolve so that its accumulated findings can be compared and trusted (Hulleman et al., 2010). The enduring contribution across all of this is the reframing the century delivered: achievement is not simply what a person accomplishes but what their motives, expectancies, values, and goals make of the attempt.
